The design of waterfront structures constitutes a specialized discipline of Civil Engineering. Generally, these structures include facilities for shore protection (rock groins and breakwaters); the mooring of ships (docks, piers, dolphins); and flood control (dikes and rock revetments). Design of waterfront facilities requires knowledge of tides and currents, wind fetches, and the action of waves, both the breaking and run-up types. GRA has successfully designed these types of facilities for Federal, State and Municipal agencies, as well as for private interests.
