Highway

The Relocation of Route 403 is the largest and most comprehensive project ever undertaken by GRA. It is a new freeway that will connect the existing Route 4 freeway in East Greenwich with the Quonset Business Park in North Kingstown, R.I. This 4.5-mile long, 4-lane controlled access facility is being implemented by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) to provide improved highway access to one of the premier industrial parks in this region of the country.

The new freeway will contain three major interchanges; a total of 14.8 miles of roadway and ramps; the relocation of a section of U.S. Route 1 (Post Road); 14 new bridges, two of which must be considered as complex; six signalized intersections; various temporary facilities; and extensive facilities for controlling storm water runoff and protecting a groundwater aquifer and freshwater wetlands.

The construction cost of this facility is approximately $140,000,000.

GRA has conducted conceptual and final designs for hundreds of highway projects. The scope of these assignments ranges from multi-million dollar highway construction and reconstruction projects to simple plat streets. From low-volume rural roads to busy urban highways, GRA has developed design concepts that successfully meet the project requirements, yet are sensitive to the surrounding environment.

Conducting traffic engineering analyses and developing creative design solutions to problems involving traffic flow efficiency and safety are among GRA's strengths. Whether addressing isolated problems or working within the context of a major highway project, GRA utilizes the latest techniques and computer software packages to develop effective concepts for the safe and efficient movement of highway traffic.
